The purpose of a discussion is to participate in an exchange of ideas or viewpoints on a particular topic between two or more individuals. Engaging students in discussions results in content comprehension, allows students to articulate what they have learned, state areas of confusion, and provide valuable input and varying viewpoints resulting in deeper content comprehension. In addition to carefully crafted discussion starters, utilizing best practice strategies to skillfully guide discussions to achieve higher-level learning is key to successful discussions. Best practice strategies may include high-level questioning, weaving in opportunities for practical application, as well as pairing students (pair/share) are just a few.
Intentional Lesson Planning for Online In this session, we explored how planning lessons for the online environment is a key component to students' success. Creating transparency, timely communication, and engagement opportunities can transform online teaching environments where students are confident to succeed through collaboration and inquiry.
