Brainstorm a list of keywords relevant to the time period you are researching. You want your search terms to be relevant to the aspect of American culture you are investigating. Here are some examples:

*Note: When researching a decade, some databases prefer that you search "forties", "fifties", and "sixties" instead of "1940s", "1950s", or "1960s". It is worth it to try both ways when searching.
Searching the terms "40's", "50's", and "60's" does not work very well and should be avoided.
