Transfer of Learning: reuses knowledge from past related tasks to ease the process of learning to perform a new task. The goal of transfer learning is to leverage previous learning and experience to more efficiently learn novel, but related, concepts, compared to what would be possible without this prior experience (Yang, Hanneke, & Carbonell, 2013).
When learning in one situation facilitates learning in another situation, we are transferring learning. For example, skills in playing the violin facilitate learning to play the piano. Knowledge of mathematics facilitates to learn physics in a better way. Driving a scooter facilitates driving a motorbike.
"Transfer of learning occurs when the student is motivated by the topic, motivated to learn, has previous knowledge on the subject, and knows how to connect new information to existing information. The learner must then be able to retrieve this information and apply it to new learning" (Ferlazzo, 2021)
