There is a problem in many business organizations, and the problem is that cultural differences have impacted virtual team effectiveness. The purpose of this study is to better understand the cultural differences that affect virtual team member effectiveness. The social and culture theory of Kendra Knudtzon was the theoretical framework supporting this research. The theory acknowledges that technology primarily affects the interaction of people by influencing sociability. Research questions asked about types of cultural differences affecting virtual team members, the most common management styles, and how a business prepare employees for cultural differences. The data was collected through surveys from a sample of 10 people representing a team member and one team leader from three different companies. The results were analyzed by the researcher and, a colleague familiar with the problem, with validation of the data through Survey Monkey. Themes were developed for each research question. The results indicated the most important problems in virtual teams are communication, communication breakdown, cross cultural virtual teams and the effect on the team due to management styles, awareness of cultural diversity in virtual teams and management of cultural differences. People from different cultures and backgrounds are increasingly working together, so it is important to ensure they are comfortable despite their differences.
