The purpose of this historical, qualitative study was to understand the relationship between classic asymmetric warfare principles and how a small company employs asymmetry to execute a survival strategy. An independent mortgage broker in California was studied to determine how asymmetry was used moving from one industry to another or, at a minimum, survive in a near current state. This study attempted to address a gap in the literature relating to asymmetric strategy and the learning associated with asymmetric-symmetric strategies in small business settings. The researcher used an explanatory, historical study in which inspection of documents and oral interviews provided the researcher with timeline-driven information useful in building a sequence of events to determine if asymmetry took place or was applicable. Manual analysis of the transcripts provided the researcher with the information required to build the history. The results were inconclusive.
