Presentations can be given in two ways: virtually or in-person. 

Let's first focus on virtual presentation. 

While it is tempting to treat school very casually, it is important to remember that college is a step towards preparing for our future professional lives and/or to better our current professional situation. To be sure, it is sometimes more difficult to keep that in mind in an online world. Nevertheless, for the speeches in this class, it is imperative to set professional standards for your performance in the class. The following is a list of expectations that will help to create a more professional atmosphere for you and those who watch your speech.

1. Make sure that you control the setting of your video
   1. Close the doors to rooms that should not be in the picture.
   2. Remove all extraneous clutter from your furniture.
   3. Make your bed. If your bedroom is the only place available in which to film, your bed should either be out of the shot or neatly made. 
   4. Ensure that you are the only person in the shot.
   5. Remove pets from the environment. They are curious and want some of the attention that you are showing to the camera.
2. Dress professionally. This means that every part of you that is in the picture should be arranged in such a way that you would be prepared to immediately proceed to your dream job or an interview.
3. Make sure to control the background noise-level and volume.
   • Avoid / prevent distracting noises
   • Make sure the sound is audible.

Recording and Rehearsing Your Presentation

While virtual presentations are common, in-person presentations are too. For in-person presentations, similar to virtual or recorded presentations, you will also utilize technology, such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, Emaze, etc. 

Here are some tips to keep in mind while creating and sharing your presentation in-person.

• Find out all you can about the room in which you will be presenting.
• Use the classroom as a stage. Move around to engage and interact with your audience. Do not stand in one spot the entire time. Move with purpose; do not walk aimlessly.
• Prepare yourself emotionally and psychologically by taking the time to organize your thoughts and to look forward to teaching before every class.
• Modulate the tone, pitch, and speed of your speech. 
• Use gestures and facial expressions to help you explain, emphasize, and communicate the material. 
• Do not read your notes or slides. 
• Interact with and pay attention to your audience. Make eye contact with the students. Make sure the class is with you (following and understanding what you are discussing). If they appear to be lost, take additional time to explain points and to ask and answer questions.
• Keep track of the time.
